  2. Announcing sndcle keynote speaker: Jim Brady of Digital First Media

We are pleased to announce that “Digital Media Guy” Jim Brady, Editor-in-Chief, Digital First Media and president of the Online News Association will join us as a keynote speaker at sndcle — the 34th annual SND Workshop — Oct. 11-13 in Cleveland.

    Name: Jim Brady
Title/where you work: Editor-in-Chief, Digital First Media
Favorite storytelling tool: Blended. I prefer stories told via multiple forms, and I fear we still tend to default to text when they are so many other options out there.
Bio (in 140 characters or less): Digital media guy. Editor-in-chief @ Digital First Media. President of @ONA. Ex-GM of TBD & ex-exec editor of washingtonpost.com. AOL vet.
What/who inspires you? People and companies that stare risk in the face and keep moving ahead. Our fear of failure keeps us from trying enough new things, which means we’re more likely to fail anyway.
What is design? Design is another storytelling tool in our expanding tool set of storytelling tools. Design can tell stories all by itself, or supplement stories told in other forms. Design makes sense out the chaos that is the ever-changing world of news and information.

    Favorite design/storytelling tool: My brain
Bio (in 140 characters or less): Worked with great people at great newspapers; Illustrating with abandon, designing + directing. It’s the sharing and the teaching I love.
What/who inspires you? My child, a voice, a laugh, the look in someone’s eyes, an urban landscape, a seaside landscape. Life.
What is design? An arrangement of forms, lines, shapes and colours which pleases.

  4. sndcle, take two: Get lit

To whet your appetite for the 34th SND workshop, our second promotional video is a conversation about creativity with several members of The PD visual staff. Gotta love the quotes in this 90-second spot, including:

‘Yes’ is a real important word for creativity,
‘cause ‘no’ will just pee on your fire.

  8. Iron Chef Michael Symon pens love letter to Cleveland →

The Cleveland native, 2008 winner of “The Next Iron Chef” and operator of three Cleveland restaurants — Lola (on East 4th, next to the official sndcle hotel), B Spot (in the new Horseshoe Casino Cleveland) and Lolita writes about growing up in Cleveland and the city’s “multiple personalities” for the Huffington Post.

  9. Another reason to attend sndcle:
    the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland!

After sunset last night, the lights went dark on Cleveland’s Public Square. Soon after, downtown was treated to an intense, three-dimensional light show (see video above) on the facade of the former Higbee Building and the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland opened its doors for the first time.

The casino boasts more than 2,100 slots and 65 tables. Plenty of post-workshop entertainment just around the corner from the Hyatt Regency Cleveland at the Arcade, the official sndcle hotel.

Bio (in 140 characters or less): I enjoy clean design, microbrews and cycling every off-chance that I get.
What/who inspires you? I am inspired by the work of Charles and Ray Eames. Their philosophy of bringing design to the masses is something that resonates well with how web design should be approached. Good design must be practical, functional and easy to live with.
What is design? Design can either be the villain or the hero. Being conscious of your contribution is half the battle.
